James Phero

James Phero (AHS, 2005)

James A. Phero, DDS, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Phero grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from Anderson High School in 2005. He then attended Miami University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, honors with distinction. He spent the next 10 years studying at the University of North Carolina where he received the degrees of Doctor of Dental Surgery with Distinction and Doctor of Medicine. He stayed on at the University of North Carolina and completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial Surgery which he completed in 2019. He had the opportunity to move back to Cincinnati upon completing residency when he joined the division of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Cincinnati (UC) where he has been active in academic education, teaching, research, and administrative activities. His clinical practice focuses on corrective jaw surgery, facial trauma and reconstruction, temporomandibular joint surgery and the management of benign head and neck pathology. His current research projects include the use of buffered local anesthetics for procedures in the oral cavity and weight loss following orthognathic surgery. He thoroughly enjoys the opportunity to train the next generation of oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and medical students. 

Dr. Phero is active at UC and nationally in team simulation training for evaluation and management of medical emergencies. He is an American Heart Association (AHA) Instructor in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. He lectures locally, regionally and nationally on emergency management and training. 

He is the current president of the Ohio Dental Society of Anesthesiology and is on the board of directors for the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

Outside of work, Dr. Phero is an active member at Kenwood Baptist Church.  His favorite activity is spending time with his wife Brittany and their three children Luke, George and Charlie. He enjoys taking an active role in coaching various sports for the boys as well as helping out with cub scouts.
